The Juneteenth flag commemorates the official end to slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1985, Major General Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston, Texas. Here is directed his troops to enforce the Emmancipation Proclamation, thereby ending slavery in the last state that allowed it. The flag, designed by Ben Haith with collaboration from Lisa Jeanne Graf and others holds many symbols representing this day in history. The star represents both Texas and all 50 American states where African Americans are free. The burst behind the star stands for new star and the red, white and blue colors represent the colors of the United States flag.
